FULL ITINERARY
At Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly greeted and welcomed by our company representative who will transfer you to your hotel in Arusha for overnight stay. Arusha is an attractive little town situated at an altitude of about 1400m in the lush, hilly area of Tanzania and has a cool climate. The city is located below Mount Meru (4566m), Africa’s 5th highest mountain, and close to Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m), Africa’s tallest mountain. It’s the gateway to northern Tanzania’s spectacular wilderness areas. The exceptional proximity to the prime wilderness areas has earned the city the nickname “Safari Capital of Tanzania.
After breakfast with lunch boxes, a full day game drives at Arusha National Park. Just 32 km away from the town of Arusha is the Arusha National Park, it consists of three spectacular features, the Momela Lakes, Mount Meru, and the Ngurdoto Crater. On clear day’s magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen from almost any part of the park. The vegetation and wildlife varies with the topography, which ranges from forest to swamp. The park is famous for its 575 species of birdlife, both migrant and resident, and black and white colobus monkey – the only place they may be seen on the Northern Circuit. Elephant are rare, and lion absent all together, but other animals frequently seen in the park are barboon, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, hyena, warthog, zebra and a wide range of antelope species including dik-dik and waterbuck.
We depart today for the two hours drive to Tarangire, Tanzania’s 1,100-square-mile park known especially for its high concentration of elephants and for the many baobab trees dotting the savanna. The park’s namesake Tarangire River acts as a migration hub for thousands of wildebeests, zebras, and Cape buffaloes, and we may see these and other animals on the day’s first game drive. After our drive, we arrive at our lodge, located within the park itself. After lunch and some time at leisure, late afternoon we enjoy another game drive in the park, where we try to spot the after mentioned animals as well giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, and of course, elephants.
Today we explore this gem of a park slightly off the beaten path on both morning and afternoon game drives. Tanzania’s sixth-largest national park, Tarangire is surpassed only by famed Serengeti National Park in wildlife diversity. Along with the abundant game, we’re sure to see some of Tarangire’s 550 species of birds, as well as the many termite mounds scattered amid the grass-and swampland here. These distinct mounds – which look like sandcastles and may reach up to 20 feet tall – are often re-colonized by clever dwarf mongoose after the termites have left. We enjoy all meals today at our lodge, where we also have time to take advantage of the pool, grounds, and comfortable public areas.
After breakfast drive to Manyara for an exciting biking tour through the vibrant village of Mto wa Mbu to the shore of Lake Manyara where there are stunning vistas of the lake, Rift Valley Wall and some small herds of wildlife like Zebras, Wildebeests, and Gazelles along with variety of birdlife species. Lunch at Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge.
Biking tour offers an amazing opportunity to explore the village with its beautiful sights. The ride takes you through Local farms, visiting Local schools, Milling Machines, Churches and Local bars accompanied by an experienced local guide. Rides are always on fairly flat single tracks. From this tour you will learn many different things from your local guide including the background of the village and its people, processes of making local beer and much more. Local lunch can also be prepared for you at one of the villager’s house.
Another option to biking tour in this vibrant village is biking to the shore of Lake Manyara where there are stunning vistas of the lake, Rift Valley Wall and some small herds of wildlife like Zebras, Wildebeests, and Gazelles along with variety of birdlife species.
This day is genuinely dedicated at exploring, discovering, learning, experiencing and enjoying the African culture of the Hadzabe tribe and their neighbors Datoga. Activities Include; Traditional hunting, nature walk, general historical, socially, traditionally back grounds and many other fun activities. Thereafter, drive to Ngorongoro Conservation area. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included.
The hadzabe are indigenous ethnic group of people living in central rift valley in Lake Eyasi. They are among very few tribes in Tanzania that still live their primitive life. The Hadzabe are not closely related to any of the tribes in Tanzania but their life style resembles the Bushmen of Kalahari. Hadzabe mostly depend on traditional hunting and wild fruits gathering for their daily living. Their history and traditional ways of life are amazing to learn, explore and experience theoretically and practically. Hadzabe are kind hearted and welcoming people, ready to share their valued history, culture, taboos, traditions and customs. Everything will be naturally locally organized just to give you a genuine feelings and image of the ever lived African ancestors.
Have you ever gone on traditional hunting with bows, arrows, spears and clubs accompanied by dogs as your back up army? It sounds fun stalking at agile Dik-dik or setting ambush on African hare, pulling arrow strings at hidden Impala or tracking Kudu`s footprints. Every moment with Hadzabe is worth experience. The amazing walking, bush to bush searching for wild fruits and berries while enjoying spectacular landscapes. Despite of learning their history, experiencing their daily lives, embarking on hunting, fruit gathering and nature expeditions, you will also have a chance to learn different uses of plants as food and medicines.
This morning we depart by coach for Ngorongoro Conservation Area, wildlife haven and homeland of the semi-nomadic Maasai people. We arrive in time for lunch at our safari lodge uniquely set on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, which blends in so well with the landscape that it is invisible from the crater floor. We have the afternoon leisure here, giving us time to familiarize ourselves with the lodge’s rock-built passages, timbered decks, and unmatched sense of place. The views of the Ngorongoro Crater {the world’s largest intact volcanic crater} are endless and breathtaking. Tonight we dine at our lodge, as we will throughout our stay here.
This morning we set out on an unforgettable game drive as we descend to the floor of magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site and, at 100 square miles, the world’s largest intact and perfectly formed volcanic caldera. The unique biosphere here has remained unchanged for eons; towering walls encircle the crater’s floor which represents Africa in microcosm: grassland, swamps, lakes, forests, and some 25,000 mammals, including elephant, black rhinoceros, lion, hippo, and zebra. Because Ngorongoro has abundant food and water year-round, the animals here do not migrate as they do between Masai Mara and the Serengeti. And because they live within the confines of the steep-walled caldera, Ngorongoro’s animals are less shy and more approachable than those at other reserves. Throughout our explorations we also may see semi-nomadic Maasai tribesmen as they engage in their age-old practice of grazing their cattle alongside the wild animals. This afternoon is at leisure to relax at our rustic lodge on the crater’s rim.
We set off northwest today towards the fabled Serengeti, stopping along the way to visit 31-mile Olduvai George, part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area {which itself is part of the Serengeti region}. It was here in 1959 that anthropologist Mary Leakey discovered the 1.8-million-year-old skull of Australopithecus boisei – and revolutionized the study of human evolution. Known as the “cradle of mankind,” Olduvai ranks as one of the world’s most important prehistoric archaeological sites for its rich fossils, early hominid remains, and the ongoing discovery of some of the world’s oldest stone tool technologies. The Leakey family continues to research early human development at Olduvai to this day. After our visit to Olduvai this afternoon we visit a local Maasai people village, where we see their traditional pastoral lifestyle up close. These semi-nomadic people have called this rigion home for millennia, their deep-rooted culture dictates they live in harmony with the wildlife surrounding the – hence they rarely hunt. The Maasai raise cattle, which along with lion and wildebeest play important roles in their cultural beliefs.
We continue on {bringing with us a simple prepared lunch} to Serengeti National Park, home to lion, leopard, cheetah, zebra, wildebeest, and many more mammal and bird species. The Serengeti, the Maasai’s “endless plain,” is considered Africa’s finest park, and we begin to see why on this afternoon’s game drive. Comprising two UNESCO World Heritage sites and two Biosphere Reserves, the Serengeti has inspired such writers as Ernest Hemingway and Peter Mattheissen, as well as filmmakers, photographers, and scientists in an ecosystem that has changed little in the past million years. Following our game drive, we arrive to our lodge with time to freshen up before dinner time.
In Tanzania’s northeast corner sits the vast Serengeti National Park, a 5,700-square-mile piece of land {equal in size to Connecticut}, one of the world’s last great wildlife refuges, and the Tanzanian neighbor of Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve. In addition to boasting the highest concentration of large animals on the planet, the Serengeti’s vast ranges provide habitat for more than 500 bird species. Twice a year {Jan – Feb and Jun – Oct}, some 1.3 million wildebeest, 200,00 zbra, and 300,00 Thomson’s gazelle migrate to new grazing lands, sparking one of nature’s most spectacular sights and the world’s largest migration. But the Serengeti’s treeless plain teem with animal life year-round, and this is the best place to see lion, leopard, and cheetah up close. On today’s game drives, we have the chance to see some – or all – of Africa’s “Big Five;” lion, Cape buffalo, elephant, rhino, and leopard, along with wildebeest, zebra eland, gazelle, other plains animals, and some 500 species of birds. Between and after our drives, we have time to enjoy meals and the amenities at our lodge, which include a raised terrace and stone-ranged infinity pool with views over the savanna.
We have another full day to absorb the splendor of the Serengeti, enjoying morning and afternoon game drives. Some 3,000 lions make their home here, comprising the largest leonine population anywhere in the world. In additional to Big Five, we may also see some lesser-known, but still thrilling, savanna-dwellers: slander impalas with their ridged horns, graceful giraffes, African buffalo, packs of roving hyena, and perhaps the tiny, foot-high antelope called the dik-dik, among many others.
After breakfast, morning game drive en route to Kilimanjaro Airport for departure. Note that this does not have to be the end of your journey. You can always combine it with a trekking tour or a trip to the stunning beaches of Zanzibar.
